Family and Friends
Robert was the son of Margaret Isabella Balfour and Thomas Stevenson. Margaret’s father was a minister of the church in Scotland, while his father’s whole family had a legacy profession in lighthouse design .
Long John Silver, a character from the book “The treasure Island“ is said to be modeled after Henley, a friend of Robert’s. Henley had a wooden leg and he occasionally collaborated with Robert in writing. Their close friendship was broken by a quarrel in 1888.
Many of Robert’s original manuscripts were lost, including ‘The Treasure Island‘ and ‘The Black Arrow‘. His heirs sold his papers which were later auctioned off. Besides that, Robert wrote 123 musical compositions including solos, duets, trios and quarters, as he played the piano and the flageolet.
